In October 2025, Daikin U.S.’s Washington, D.C. office proudly achieved WELL Platinum certification — the highest distinction awarded by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI).
We recently caught up with Anuj Mistry, Manager, Technical Services at Daikin U.S., to learn more about this important initiative.
Q1. How long did the process take, and what did it involve?
Achieving WELL Platinum certification took about a year and a half from concept to certification. We began integrating WELL principles right from the design phase of our new office, thinking about air, light, movement, and community as core design drivers.
Our team led the process internally, identifying features that aligned with both WELL requirements and Daikin’s own expertise in indoor air quality. After construction, a third-party agency verified performance, and we submitted detailed documentation to the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI). It was a rigorous journey, but one that aligned perfectly with who we are as a company.
Q2. What specific features helped the D.C. office earn this top certification? The WELL Platinum certification recognizes that our DC office provides a comfortable, balanced indoor environment that supports our people throughout the day.
The space offers indoor air quality, abundant natural light, and thoughtfully designed areas that encourage focus, movement, and collaboration—helping employees feel comfortable in their daily work.
In particular, the Air concept was a key strength.
The office features a multi-stage filtration system, where outdoor air is filtered twice - first through MERV 13 and then MERV 11 filters. Indoor air is also continuously recirculated to maximize indoor air quality.
Additionally, sorbent-laced filtration media capture volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and CO₂, allowing the office to maintain fresh, odor-free indoor air without the need for additional outdoor air intake.
The office also promotes physical movement through fully adjustable desks, chairs, and monitor arms, as well as on-site gym access, bike commuting facilities, and nearby parks for breaks and exercise.
Q3. Why did Daikin feel it was important to pursue WELL Certification?
As a company that focuses so much on “Perfecting The Air We Share,” we wanted to demonstrate the power of our technologies and purpose in our own workspace. This certification isn’t just a plaque on the wall - it’s proof that Daikin products and design approaches can support great indoor environments. By putting Daikin’s purpose into practice in our own workplace, we strengthen the trust of our employees, partners, and customers alike. In short, the D.C. office is more than an office -it’s a living example of what Daikin stands for.
Q4. How does this achievement reflect Daikin’s commitment?
Sustainability is now inseparable from building design and from business. Customers today expect not only efficiency, but also comfortable indoor environments. By earning the highest level of WELL Certification (Platinum) with a score of 82 points, we’re showing that indoor air quality and comfort are not just optional, but really part of what makes Daikin a trusted source for sustainable and comfortable indoor environments.
Q5. On a personal note, how did it feel to lead this project?
It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience. The process brought together people from every part of the company, including engineering, design, facilities, HR, and communications. Seeing our people enjoy the space every day — working comfortably with quality indoor air, collaborating naturally — that’s the real success.
